Burn Everything But This

8F378C04-B064-4775-988F-6A05FC21743B-w800-h600Don’t give in to the minutiae of the day that tries to distract you from what matters so it can steal away your dreams.

Don’t give in and let thoughts of what could be tomorrow—or next year—deprive you of what is right now. Fight for a better tomorrow. But live in today.

Don’t give in to thoughts about how you can’t, aren’t good enough, or don’t have enough.

Don’t give in to the idea that you need to be more than you already are.

Don’t give in to the illusion that there’s something or someone out there, over there, or just beyond that can fix it all and make you happy.

Don’t give in to stories about how you’ve been wronged, failed in some way, and should have done things differently.

Don’t give in to thinking that there’s not enough time, that it’s too late and you blew your chances.

Don’t give in to the idea of what anybody else says, thinks, or expects 0f you.

Don’t give in to the box you put yourself in, the bars you feel you deserve to live behind, or the walls you keep the world out with.

Don’t give in to having hatred for those who’ve offended your sense of self, trampled on your dignity, or owe you something… anything… no matter how big or small.

Don’t give in to the day when it seems like it’s more than you can stand, when you just wanna pull the covers up and hide.

Don’t give in to those who tell you that you can’t. Let their words of disbelief empower you. Use their doubt and condemnation as fuel for your fire.

Don’t give in to the big lie that’s all around you—everywhere you look—that says you need to look good, make a bunch of money and buy a bunch of things. That you need to “have it all.”

Don’t give in to the thoughts that try to pull you away from the one place that matters, the only thing there is… This.

Right here, right now.

This eternal moment.

Don’t give in just because you’ve given in so many times before.

Even if it seems like giving in is all you know how to do.

Right now, stand your ground. Be present. Love with everything you’ve got. And live your life with purpose. On purpose.

Not a life lived to impress anyone or to gain acceptance.

But a life that burns away everything that simply does not fucking matter.

A life that only you can live.

  14. Chris,

As always great post. I especially like this.

“Don’t give in to having hatred for those who’ve offended your sense of self, trampled on your dignity, or owe you something… anything… no matter how big or small.”

It’s easy enough to start hating when so many piss us off or trample on us. But, taking the high road and forgiving can change us for the better.

Great post man, don’t stop writing :)

    • Chris McCombs Chris McCombs says:

      right on Michael

yeah this is an area I’ve struggled a lot with personally

probably what it ends up in my writing

fortunately there’s been some evolution here for me, it can be a tough one though

seems in the end it’s all about acceptance and self-forgiveness

at least that’s been my experience

      thanks for the comment bro

Funny, I was just thinking about saying this very thing to a friend, who believes he doesn’t deserve to be out of the box. I guess I’ll just send him your post instead. Thank you, Chris– good timing as always.
