Beyond The Matrix and Onto Insular Tahiti

I woke this morning with a knot in my gut, a spring that someone must have tightened in the middle of the night

The to-do list is calling me before I even climb out of bed… and it’s Sunday… isn’t this supposed to be a day of rest or something?

Not for me, not today at least, I got shit to do

I’ve been pulled into the Matrix again

There’s a sense I must rush through my morning practice of prayer, meditation and hard exercise… even though these are the exact practices that help me deal with my daily adventure into chaos and “getting shit done”

It’s easy to get sucked in…

Facebook, twitter, email, skype, text, voicemail’s, phone calls, doctor, lawyer, book keeper, accountant, forms, paperwork, faxes and taxes, banking, appointments, errands, responsibilities, others expectations, paying the bills

People demanding attention every chance they get

Distractions assaulting me from every corner

24 hours in a day and 78 hours of shit to do.

Fuck this, I’m taking my copy of Walden and heading up to the mountains

I feel a deep kinship with the deceased Christopher Johnson McCandless, the young man Jon Krakauer’s ‘Into The Wild’ is about

At 24 he simply gave his money to charity and went off into the woods looking for solitude and simplicity

We amass material and are constantly trying keep up appearances as well as with the Kardashians… letting the Illusion take front and center stage, while our souls sit in the back row,  yelling “booooo” and throwing popcorn

Shit hold on, I have a text message, email and phone call all coming in at the same time, I better handle these

Too much instant cyber connection and constant accessibility

We text and tweet while we grow more distant than ever before

Distant from ourselves

Our soul

The Divine

Too many screens and not enough heart

Iphone, ipad, laptop, desktop and a TV in every room

Too much media… too much “news” … or shall I just call it what it is…

The Great Brainwashing Fear Machine, Sponsored By “Buy Our Shit”

I do my best to avoid its ambushes

Priests and teachers having sex with our children, school shootings, ponzi schemes, financial debauchery raping our economy, politicians feeding us bullshit by the warehouse while pointing out how the other guy has a smaller penis, more movie stars overdosing, Branjolie, Snooky, who dissed who on American Idol last night, what color did Pink wear to the awards show? … and was that dress in poor taste or what?

AND… New study shows science has finally proven that healthy eating and exercise may be bad for you, but don’t worry, doctor discovers a miracle pill that will keep you young and healthy for years, allowing you to sit on your ass, eat onion rings and smoke up like you’re at an AA meeting in the 1950’s

Plus there’s some real bad shit that happened just down the street, as well as Storm Watch 2013… just after this word from our sponsors

Buy this, buy this, wear this, wear that, eat this, eat that, take this, take that… side effects may include anal bleeding, liver disease, extreme psychosis and a suicidal depression so bad you might as well just take the whole fucking bottle all at once, because that’s the quickest and most painless way outta this mess

Buy buy buy …. then back to more fear and devastation

Fear and consumerism

There’s people who look much better than you, have more than you and are much cooler than you could ever hope to be

Who has the biggest house, fastest car and hottest wife?

The soul can sit in the backseat, as long as the car looks good and there’s a hottie riding shotgun

“And Soul, if there’s no room for you back there next to Pride, Greed and Envy… you can always get back in the trunk”

I think we’ve got it all wrong

It’s all back asswards and dubious

Like the mystics have pointed to, we live in Illusion… a place just as fictitious as Bruce Willis, blonde in one arm and one liner in the other, jumping out the window just before the highrise goes boom

Now this Illusion DOES have a purpose… for all this chaos is not without reason… it may be without rhyme, but it does have a reason

A purpose

To frustrate the living shit out of us so much, beat us into submission so badly, kick us while we’re down so many times, that we have no good choice but to turn within and to something greater

Something that cannot be seen with the eyes or heard with the ears

If your looking for lasting happiness in the “real world” … the world of material, vanity and what the other guy has that we don’t… I’ll have to quote the great Henry Rollins here and let you know that “Your choice is fish”

Fish is what you’re getting, you have no other choice here

If you don’t want fish tonight, you’re gonna have to get up from this joint and go someplace else

A place Not of This World

“For as this appalling ocean surrounds the verdant land, so in the soul of man there lies one insular Tahiti, full of peace and joy, but encompassed by all the horrors of the half known life.”

Herman Melville, Moby Dick

There’s a Walden Pond that exists for each of us

Right here, right now, just on the other side of thoughts of who we are and who we are in relationship to “them” … the “others”

620C83E3-24AA-4193-B7FD-2E1BA91A4F01There’s a mountain top inside with a view as far as our spirit can see

It’s who we ARE at your core

Not the THOUGHTS of who we are, but who we REALLY are

The One who is beyond thought, yet Aware of the thoughts themselves

If we’re just who we think we are, we’re screwed

I don’t know about you, but I’ve thought of myself as a “Low Down Piece of Shit” and “The Coolest Mother Fucker On Earth”… both in the SAME day

Two sides of the same rusty old coin

There’s a truth bigger than anything our little minds can conceive

A truth blinded by our very make up

We get glimpses of it, but it’s quickly over-shadowed by the show we feel that we must put on

Or else

Being a tribal lot we do some pretty weird shit

We all wanna be accepted, be looked upon with kind eyes and not do anything that might get us outed from the tribe

Our DNA tells us if we’re outed, we’d be dead as Dillinger

“The amateur fears that if he turns pro and lives out his calling, he will have to live up to who he really is and what he is truly capable of.

The amateur is terrified that if the tribe should discover who he really is, he will be kicked out into the cold and die.

The amateur dreads becoming who she really is because she fears that this new person will be judged by others as “different.” The tribe will declare us “weird” or “queer” or “crazy.”

Here’s the truth : the tribe doesn’t give a shit. There is no tribe.”

Steven Pressfield – Turning Pro

The need for acceptance is rooted DEEP

Be it acceptance from our family, peers, co-workers, colleagues, Facebook friends or imaginary people we don’t even know

We walk a line that society says to walk

We try to fit in… as if life is one big damn high-school hang-out

It’s gotta look like we really have our shit together

Gotta keep up appearances … and it’s a full time gig

We are smart, edgy, confident, cool and on top of our game

We know how to fuck and it shows

We can protect, provide and would make for an ideal mate

We are good stock

We drive cars that prove our point

We get wives, girlfriends, boyfriends and husbands who make us look important and worthy… who maybe even make our friends a little jealous

We reach for rungs on the social ladder… but this ladder, is leaning against the wrong wall

We constantly compare ourselves to others… are we smarter, better looking, more athletic, more fit, more well spoken and successful?

… Or are they?

I love being a big dude… it’s RARE I run into someone bigger… REAL RARE… I don’t like it when I do… don’t you know I’m supposed to be the biggest mother fucker in the room?

Dammit I’m Big Chris

Being in a room with a taller guy who has has larger shoulders than me… makes me feel like I have to hand over my imaginary “Big Guy Crown” to this larger specimen of a man

That’s my fucking crown, don’t you know?

I suddenly go from feeling like the biggest person in the room to the smallest

Who gives a shit?

We like our friends to know how much money we make… well at least if we make more than they do… if they make more, it’s best we keep our mouth’s shut

We drop names of that famous person we know… even if we just met them one time… we say, my “friend so and so”

This gives us more street cred

If our competitors are doing better than us, we hate them, and want to see them do poorly

If we have a friend who is a competitor, and they suddenly start doing a lot better than us, we may like them, but deep inside there’s a part of us that hates them, and wants to see em’ burn, well at least their business that is

Once we’re doing better than them again, they can be our true friend,  especially if we can show off how much better our business is doing than theirs

The better they do, the worse we feel

Not in our hearts of course, in our hearts and souls we know this is all non-sense

But in the part of the mind where the Ego lives… it can get a little funky… especially when it feels it’s dropped down a notch or two

The place of “I” and “Them”

To live in this place, is to live in a box

To feel worthy, we compare our box to other boxes, and only feel good when our box is bigger, better and cooler than their box

Our box keeps us safe

Safe from the truth of who we are

My name is this, I’m like this, I do this for a living, I drive this, I live in that, I like these sports teams, this person is my friend, I even know so and so and I’m married to that over there

We constantly work on this story of who we are in relation to the world

This is our masterpiece

It is also a work of complete fiction

We don’t wanna know who we really are, that’s too scary, too empty … too… undefinable

We can’t look

Blinded by the world we run…  to something… ANYTHING to keep ourselves busy… Facebook, email, text messages, phone calls, cleaning the house, getting ready, getting a bite, working, reading, writing, talking, fucking, smoking, drinking…

… Thinking

Corey Mother Fucking Taylor - C.M.F.T. for short

Corey Mother Fucking Taylor

Do do do

We’re so busy doing shit, we’ve forgotten how to just be

No goals, no agendas, no motives, no plans, no fucking Facebook

Just Being

We still gotta do stuff, but to put all of our attention out into the world, is to live in a state of constant unease and anxiety

There’s just to much to do… and the “to-do” list is a sweet seductress… but she’s also a total bitch

She’s a succubus who will drain the soul right from your body and keep it, as long as you stay busy in the doing,  and forget about the Being, your ass is hers

Too much drama going on, too much to figure out, too many places to go, people to see and money to make

Busy doing a bunch of stuff, that at the end of the day, really doesn’t matter all that much

I understand a lot of it still needs to get done, but there’s a better way to go about it than this world would have us believe

“When nothing is done,
nothing is left undone.”

Lao Tzu – Tao Te Ching

Too often we reside ourselves to the choppy waters on the top of the lake, completely forgetting that there’s deep still waters just below the surface

The water on top is almost always choppy

But we feel safe in the chops

Safe in the chaos of the task list

We know it well… it’s a hard won ally

Who knows what might be lurking down below?

The stillness is scary

It’s vast and unknown

Easier to drift endlessly up here on the surface… especially if we stay in the shallow waters

Where we can’t get hurt

And where nothing amazing happens

We can keep up with the The Joneses, The Kardashians and The Real Housewives of Who Cares, concern ourselves with what famous celebrity is dating who, who said what on Twitter and jam out to Lady Gaga’s new song… all while standing in water that barely comes up to our knees

At least it feels safe

Too scared to live on the edge

Easier to watch other people on TV walking that edge

For many people, the edge of their couch is as close as it’s gonna get

Go against the grain and do something great today

Something that our heart and soul has called us to do

Something from that place of Being… from love, passion, purpose and contribution

Not from the fear-based sense of self… from the me and the mine and gotta get more

Do something that isn’t just to pay the bills, fatten the bank account, make you look good or keep you busy

Something that will make this world a better place for entire bloodlines to come

What’s in you that’s better than your wallet, TV,  house, six-pack abs and the girl on your arm?

Where’s your revolution?

Your Hero’s Journey?

Do you hear a call?

Where’s your REAL masterpiece ?

Not the cheap paperback version your mind is trying passing off for one

What’s your gift?

Your legacy just waiting to come out of you?

The book you’ve been wanting to write that will change the way people look at their lives forever

That business that you’ve been wanting to start helping people to become happier and healthier

The school you want to build halfway across the globe

The water you want to bring to the children who are thirsty

There’s an Eternal Well inside of you

If you’re tapping in, and living from that Well, I commend you

If you’re not living from the Well, one of my greatest wishes is that this blog will point it out to you, help you remember your way back Home

There’s some straight up awesome stuff you can add to this world that NO ONE else can do in quite the unique and amazing way you can

The hero wanders. The hero suffers. The hero returns. You are that hero

Steven Pressfield – Turning Pro

If you’re reading this blog, I trust that you’re on another level than the average pedestrian, mesmerized by reality television, caught up in the drama of life, just working to make a pay check and living for the weekend, easily entertained by the countless repetition of shallow Hollywood blockbusters stocked with perfect looking casts and predictable one liners

Your beyond which celebrity is banging who, who got arrested last night and what politician got caught up in the most recent scandal

Your more than something that can fit into a fucking box

You’re not your jeans, car, credit profile or Facebook status

You’re deeper than the chops

Greater than someone who can be defined by a job, car, house or mate

Someone who isn’t that worried what the tribe thinks, cuz you know there is no tribe

From The Film "Into the Wild"

From The Film “Into the Wild”

But if there was one, and you got the boot, not only will you be just fine on your own, you’ll probably go build your own fucking tribe, and have the time of your life doing it

Our greatness comes from our conscious union with our Being

I read EVERY word of your shit and dont scan.

    WOW… that is all

“I don’t know about you, but I’ve thought of myself as a “Low Down Piece of Shit” and “The Coolest Mother Fucker On Earth”… both in the SAME day”

  2. You’re the fucking man Chris! Loved your post it literally gave me goosebumps.

    Time to awaken King Kong.

  3. I watched ‘Into the Wild’ five times. I couldn’t get enough of it because of how rich the story was. It’s always awesome to read your words of wisdom Chris!

  4. Hey Chris!
Thanks for yet another deep and heartfelt post!
I loved what Christopher McCandless did (or at least what I read in Into the Wild). He truly didn’t give a fuck about the “real world” and just put his soul in the drivers seat. I strive to do the same every day… as hard as it can be sometimes.. between all the shit that piles up on our to do lists..
Every time I read a post of yours I feel so inspired. You’ve inspired me to create my own blog about life and positive progression and focus more on the things I am passionate about.. Thank you!
“There’s some straight up awesome stuff you can add to this world that NO ONE else can do in quite the unique and amazing way you can”
This is true of every individual – everyone has a unique perspective and experiences. They shape us and help us grow.
    Keep sharing yours!

  5. Chris this post is awesome…. it is also exactly what I needed to hear right now.

Get caught up in so much of this s*&t and forget who I truly am underneath and deep down.

    Thank you

  6. Another good one Chris.. the only thing is that first you’re saying don’t get caught up with the social media etc. and then at the end tell us to click the share button!

    Did it anyway though 🙂

    All my best,

  9. Great post Chris. I’ve been on a similar wavelength of late – looking at social media, information management, to-do lists & expectations. My views and beliefs are rapidly changing with respect to those avenues. I’ve found that I’m accomplishing more by setting out to do less – and yes, that sounds funny because by definition it should be true. But a lengthy to-do list is a real stressor for me and I end up avoiding or procrastinating – totally paralyzed by how much I need to do. By picking a few important items and completing those I gain confidence & steam to do more – jumping into other “to-do” stuff – hence the accomplishing more. I know a lot of people smarter than me figured this out long ago but we all need the light bulb to go off in our own heads. Hand & hand with that is I’m following less information – not scanning Facebook to see what my friends are doing, who has what shiny new toys, who is complaining about X, Y & Z – I’m not reading a million blogs or searching Twitter for new information. I’m getting out there and doing more. It makes for a much happier lifestyle. But enough about me dude – thanks again for posting this – loved reading your take on this all.

    • Chris McCombs Chris McCombs says:

Hey Right on Andy, I can relate 100%

I’ve been OWNED by to-do lists, that’s not how life is meant to be lived

  10. Well said, its the truth ….there is no tribe only other peoples opinions and they mean shit

You friggin’ nailed it again Big Chris! You write the conversations in my head bro, its awesome…Keep it coming bro.
    many thanks.

  12. Love it Big Chris. Thanks for being a voice of quality that we can gain true meaning and value from. Thanks for keeping it real.

  13. I love this Chris.

It’s so easy to get lost in this whirlwind called life.

So many people go through life unhappy even if they have all kinds of ‘stuff’ because none of it is what they really want.

They don’t have what they really want because they don’t know what they really want.

And, they don’t know what they really want because they just don’t know who they really are.

They think they’re all those labels like their job, their name, their titles and all that.

That’s just the role we play…The great illusion…

If we would just stop focusing on all the shit that doesn’t matter and stop worrying about what other people think.

Just get to know who we really are and be ourselves…that’s where all the peace and happiness reside 🙂

Thanks for speaking the truth Chris!

    • Chris McCombs Chris McCombs says:

      Thanks for sharing Kevin

I’ve been this person you speak of MANY MANY times

it’s no way to live… and there IS another way

  14. Big Chris,

This is BY FAR the best I’ve ever read from you, Man. EPIC!!!

“Too many screens and not enough heart.”
“Go against the grain and do something great today.”

Those two sentences pretty much sum up where life has gotten to and where it needs to get back to.

Thank you! A great way to kick off the week!

Hey thanks Rick, I push publish and never know how it’ll be received

  17. Rommel Acda says:

This is how I felt year two into owning my business and I purposely went on “personal quests” to quiet the Jekyll side of things, and nourish my soul. Some people didn’t get it, but they were seduced by all the distractions thinking that they were bettering themselves.

I truly miss my home island in the sense that whenever I needed to escape to a private section of the beach, and just lay there listening to the wind blowing through the trees, listening to the waves break, feeling the sun, and just taking in all of the beauty of an island in order to escape and dream.

Ironic thing is that once I started pursuing my dream it in someway took me away from the “dreamer” state and it became a challenge to unplug.

This is where strategic lock-outs, meditation, and tending to my warrior soul became crucial. Finding meditative technologies such as Centerpointe and Silva have helped when I can’t get away to nature.

Thanks for the great post once again Chris!

    • Chris McCombs Chris McCombs says:

hey thanks Rommel… man I do a lot of that same stuff, the beach is one of my faves

  18. It’s all just a story made up in our heads, the past is over only the memory lives on in our head and we created the memory, like a Movie on the big screen we created and stared in every part.

It’s not really you’re Dad/Mom/Friend in your head it’s you like a character in a novel those people/things in your memories can only do/act/say/be whatever you have them do. If you don’t like it then change what they do in your head and then smile and act surprised when you meet them in the “real” world and they are suddenly a completely different person.

That’s the illusion or Maya of life, now I’m off to my rock on the hill to sit with the sun, watch my dogs and kiss my wife, nothing to buy or sell up there ;-))

Look at what the masses are doing and run screaming the other way…Stuart Wilde

Thanks for inspiration Chris and reminding me that I didn’t workout today

  19. Amazing post, just like all the others. You really have a way of speaking the truth that makes it easy for me to relate to. Keep them coming

  20. Hey Chris,

From now on, I’ll call you Big Dr. Chris 🙂 I was feeling very bad, because I lost my job and it’s damn hard to find another one so quickly.
After reading your post, I feel great and released; I fucking hated my job and my boss, anyway. From now on, I’m free to follow the true Me.

“We reach for rungs on the social ladder… but this ladder, is leaning against the wrong wall” I really liked how you said this, brilliant! An incredibly inspiring post my friend, I really enjoyed reading it and I absolutely love your style of writing.

My favorite quote from the Warrior post was: “The Warrior resides in the deep still waters, no matter how choppy the waters on the surface may be, the deep waters are always still” I was very happy when I saw you re-visited this because it has been in my head every since I read it, such a beautiful and real way to think. I love how connected to nature you are and how you have a deep understanding of the true nature of life.

It is always amazing to me to hear from someone who has been financially successful in life but can see things for what they really are instead of getting caught up in the “shallow illusion” It seems there is sooo much pressure in life to get rich, go to college, get a good job etc. that people completely lose sight of who they really are, and end up missing the best things in life. No stopping to smell the roses when money is your god.

When I come across someone like you I realize there is still hope for the world, and my heart is deeply saddened by the fact that the vast majority of people are so blind and living lives so materialistically. Lost in a superficial dream that never really leads to bliss.

Thank you for continuing to spread the light and truth, I know your blog will make a difference in the lives of those who come across it.

    • Chris McCombs Chris McCombs says:

Hey thanks shaun, your words mean a lot, I hope one day, to be half as awesome as your comment made me out to be

  22. I don’t know how I landed here. I know nothing about blogging (time to learn I guess).

What I do know is that truth and honesty are finally being accepted and even heralded in these times of mass deception.

You don’t have to be ONE THING. You can (and are) many things and its nice to see some one embracing their branding as such.

Great post Chris. Glad I found it.

    • Chris McCombs Chris McCombs says:

      Yes, wise words there Ward

thanks for sharing man, glad you liked the post, and welcome to the crazy world of blogs

  23. Diane Menchhofer says:

Awesome blog, Big Chris!! SO MANY times, I have pushed the envelope to get a reaction or not because I just wanted to BE, and that is something so many people forget to do. BE true to ourselves, and in that, we will be true to others and inspire them OR possibly not, but who cares as long as we are just being Real. I love the adventure “Into the Wild.” I have encouraged my children to follow their longings – they have and they still have turned out very alright. I pretty much liken myself to modeling the Velveteen Rabbit. People look at me and expect me to behave a certain way, and when I feel those kind of expectations, that is when I rebel and instantly go into my Velveteen Rabbit mode. Love me or love me not – it really doesn’t matter. As long as I love myself by being true to myself.

    Great post brotha!!

  28. Chris, you’re a sage brother. Keep doing what you’re doing. The world needs you (specially the great big U S of A). Instead of statues of war heros there’ll be statues dedicated to people like you one day

  29. Adrian Daisy Day says:

I read every word and I am to big to fit into a box! I thought about becoming a Nun today and just totally and completely living for the Lord and not to be so busy in my day where I don’t give him enough time, I looked in my rear view mirror and Nun is what I seen in myself

  30. Hey, I bought “Turning Pro” because of this post. I really like your storytelling. Just curious… Why don’t you use periods?

Seems like it helps the words flow somehow for you. I like it. Adds style.

  31. Oh by the way I put a link on my blog to yours. Hope you don’t mind :-). This is the only blog I really read right now.

  32. Fred Sassani says:

This post should be read out loud by the President word for word at the state of union. Because the state of this country is in the shit hole for all reasons you mentioned. Great job as usual Chris and it’s refreshing to read a blog from a mans heart and not from his wallet!!

  33. Chris McCombs Chris McCombs says:

  34. Chris Keddie says:

Thank you sir. I have been able to take something from each thing I have read from you, but this one….I feel like I was in a deep sleep and you just threw a bucket of ice water on me brother. I am not ashamed to admit tears were rolling down my cheeks by the time I finished reading this. I have been mired in complacency for so long I barely remember another way. Working at a job I hate where I, and all the other hard working employees, are treated like worthless expendable chattel for the “safety” of a regular paycheck. Things start changing today. I am getting my life back in order. Thank you again for your words, and please do not ever stop.

  35. I just got time time away from my To Do List to read your blog:-)
Your shit is always brilliant! I read a lot of blogs and articles, but no shit, this is my absolute favorite.
You asked me why I am moving to Wyoming in the middle of nowhere, where my kids can actually enjoy nature.
You nailed it in this post. Talk to you soon brother, keep up the good work.

  36. Radmila Misovic says:

I had to share this great poem-maybe it will remind somebody who reads it to look at the backseat and find again his forgotten soul.

  38. Epic. Loss of ‘self’ and ‘perspective’ is epidemic, and mainfesting itself in social media addictions of which the afflicted are completely unaware! Wish everybody I knew would read and heed this.

  39. When I am looking for inspiration I always find myself reading one of your posts. For the past four years I have had similar feelings of being overwhelmed. Over connected to available to everything. I can’t get enough of you writing style, raw, blunt, and filled with truth. Keep writing and passing your wisdom to readers like me.
Thanks for making my day better. I know this is an older post but I hope you get my comment.
