Dude, I like the quotes, but only 6 (!) out of 100 are by women! That has to be rectified. Here’s one to start with:

“I would venture to guess that Anon, who wrote so many poems without signing them, was often a woman.”
– Virginia Woolf

    Two more of my favorites:

“The opposite of war isn’t peace, it’s creation” – Jonathan Larson, RENT
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” – Ferris Bueller

Also, regarding the Karen Nave quote “…imperfection is happiness” -have you ever read The Spirituality of Imperfection? At first I thought it was way too “woo-woo” if you know what I mean, but someone who is very level-headed and practical was the one to recommend it to me, so I kept reading. It has a lot of beauty.

A kind of second childhood falls on so many men. They trade their violence for the promise of a small increase of lifespan, in effect, the head of the house becomes the youngest child. And I have searched myself for this possibility with a kind of horror. For I have always lived violently, drunk hugely, eaten too much or not at all, slept around the clock or missed two nights of sleeping, worked too hard and too long in glory, or slobbed for a time in utter laziness. I’ve lifted, pulled, chopped, climbed, made love with joy and taken my hangovers as a consequence, not as a punishment. I did not want to surrender fierceness for a small gain in yardage. ~John Steinbeck, Travels with Charley

I fear stagnation and lack of progress
I fear never reaching my potential and being average
I fear being forgotten…the past… Yesterday’s news
I fear giving up and being passed by
I fear letting those I love down and my self down
I fear settling giving in to the “that’s just the way it is” mindset
I fear dying without leaving my mark
I fear not feeling these fears anymore and just floating along
These fears feed me. They nourish my drive.
I love my fear ..

Very nice list, Chris! Thanks for making and posting it for others to benefit from. It includes a lot of my favorite quotes.

I’ve used a few specific quotes quite extensively in my life, especially for a quick reminder to maintain course and to make the right decisions when my mind is screaming poor choices and excuses at me. I’ve come up with a few of my own as well. Here are three of my favorites:

“Don’t accept average habits. Strive for excellence and push the limits.”
“Humble yourself before the sight of GOD, lest GOD humble you before the sight of man.”
“Face the fear you fear to death and the death of fear is sure to come.”

And here are three more of my favorites, all of which I found while reading:

“Hope is the denial of reality. It is the carrot dangled before the draft horse to keep him plodding along in a vain attempt to reach it.” … “What I’m saying is that we should remove the carrot and walk forward with our eyes open!”
– Raistlin Majere (a fictional character created by Margaret Weis)

“All warfare is based on deception. Therefore, when capable, feign incapacity; when active, inactivity. When near, make it appear that you are far away; when far away, that you are to lure him; feign disorder and strike him. When he concentrates, prepare against him; where he is strong, avoid him. Anger his general and confuse him. Pretend inferiority and encourage his arrogance.”
– Sun Tzu (The Art of War)

“People are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want it to be true; or they’re afraid it’s true. Given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe its true, or because they’re afraid it might be true. Peoples’ heads are full of knowledge, facts and beliefs, and most of it is false, yet they think it all true. People are stupid; they can only rarely tell the difference between a lie and the truth, and yet they are confident they can, and so are all the easier to fool.”
– Zeddicus Zorander (fictional character created by Terry Goodkind)

A few more:
“Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls. The most massive characters are seared with scars.”
– Khalil Gibran

“Do not pray for easy lives, pray to be stronger men. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers, pray for powers equal to your tasks. Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle, but you shall be the miracle.”
– Phillips Brooks

“A truly strong person does not need the approval of others any more than a lion needs the approval of sheep.”
– Vernon Howard

And my personal favorite:
“I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but they whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death.”
– Leonardo da Vinci

In the name of the best within you, do not sacrifice this world to those who are its worst. In the name of the values that keep you alive, do not let your vision of man be distorted by the ugly, the cowardly, the mindless and those who have never achieved his title. Do not lose your knowledge that man’s proper estate is an upright posture, an intransigent mind and a step that travels unlimited roads. Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not-quite, the not-yet, the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish, in lonely frustration for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach. Check your road and the nature of your battle. The world you desire can be won, it exists, it is real, it is possible, it is yours. ~ Ayn Rand

We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. – Marrianne Williamson

From Pink Floyd, Wish You Were Here:

Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange
A walk on part in the war
For a lead role in a cage?

It’s never to late to get off the sidelines and back in ‘the fight’. Whatever your fight happens to be.

Becuase they change things, move the human race forward. While some may see them as crazy, we see genius.

Thank you for posting these, some really great quotes.

Here are some of my favs to share in return –

“There’s an old saying, ‘that which doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger.’ I don’t believe that. I think the things that try to kill you make you angry and sad. Strength comes from the good things – your family, your friends, the satisfaction of hard work. Those are the things that’ll keep you whole. Those are the things to hold on to when you’re broken.” — Jax Teller, Sons of Anarchy

“We’re all flawed heroes. Responsibility is power. Take responsibility for the consequences of your actions, and the world is yours. Everything is a choice.” — Tom Hiddleston

“When you walk up to opportunities door, don’t knock it… kick that b*tch in, smile, and introduce yourself.” — Dwayne Johnson

“Never never be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.” — Martin Luther King, Jr.

“Our greatest fear should not be of failure, but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter” — Francis Chan Pawleys Island Posh

“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” — Martin Luther King, Jr.

“So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing afriend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place. Show respect to all people and grovel to none. When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision. When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.”
